Wood Panels & Cabinetry FAQs
Cabinetry and veneer panel basics
What is Alor, and how does it differ from other timber panels?

Alor is a prefinished timber-faced veneer panel with Moisture-Resistant MDF core that is designed specifically for cabinetry. Unlike many other panels, Alor comes prefinished, meaning it has a high-quality UV-Lacquer finish. This creates a consistent and durable surface with clarity that cannot be replicated by manual or machine spray finishes.

Being prefinished, it also reduces the time required for cabinetmakers to produce cabinetry, as they do not need to send it away for finishing (which can add 2-4 weeks to the process).

Can Alor be used in any room of the house?

Yes, Alor is versatile and has an MR (moisture-resistant) MDF core so can be used in various rooms, including kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and bedrooms.

However, it is not recommended for horizontal use (i.e. benchtops) in rooms with high moisture or direct water contact (including kitchens and bathrooms).

What is Alor best suited for?

Cabinetry doors, drawer fronts, side and end panels, and light-duty shelving across kitchens, laundries, wardrobes, vanities and general joinery. It's not intended for benchtops, food preparation surfaces, high-moisture or high-heat zones, heavy-duty commercial or industrial storage, or as a structural brace.

Does it comply with the New Zealand Building Code?

Yes. Alor is assessed against NZBC clauses B1 (structure), B2 (durability — 5-year service life for internal elements, backed by a 7-year manufacturer warranty), C1 (limiting heat transfer, not for surfaces exceeding 70°C), C2 and C3 (fire), E3 (internal moisture — dry applications only) and F2 (hazardous building materials — Super E0 formaldehyde rating).

What's the warranty on Alor?

A 7-year manufacturer warranty covering material and manufacturing performance under specified conditions, alongside NZBC B2 durability compliance for internal elements.

Cabinetry and panel installation
Are there any special installation considerations for Alor?

Alor panels are straightforward to install, similar to other veneer panels. However, it’s essential to ensure proper edge banding and seal all cuts to prevent moisture ingress and maintain the product’s integrity.

What is Alor Duo Edge banding?

Alor Duo Edge banding is an innovative solution for more demanding applications. It is a 1mm veneer made up of a base layer of 0.5mm ABS colour-matched to a 0.5mm surface of prefinished timber. The ABS base is designed to seal the core, improving performance of the finished panel.

What are the benefits of using prefinished panels for cabinetry?

Prefinished panels like Alor save time and labor costs as they don’t require additional finishing on site. They ensure a consistent finish and reduce the risk of errors during installation, providing a high-quality, professional result.

Can Alor be used near sinks or plumbing?

Yes, with care — seal all cut-outs and toe kicks to protect the MDF core from moisture ingress, and specify a fully waterproof sealing system in high-risk areas such as bathroom, laundry or sink cabinets.

Cabinetry & panel aftercare
How do I care for cabinetry made from Alor panels?

Treat cabinetry made from Alor panels as you would with any timber panels. Regular dusting and occasional cleaning with a damp cloth and mild detergent will keep them looking great. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
